twisting lay length using gears was created by acechpr
Hi, I'm trying to find a formula to determin a certain lay on a twisting machine.
let me give you an example:
gear A = the speed of the bow in rpm of the bow
gear B = the capstan pull speed
so right now i have 58 gear on A shaft and 70 gear on B
shaft which gives me an aprox. of a .875 inch lay and im looking for the fumula that will determin different lays I need to run cable.
I have over 100 sets of gears

I don't know anything about twisting machines and the application but given the ration of the two gears you provide in the example
gear A (58 teeth) will make .828 of a turn for each turn of gear B (70 teeth) being 58/70. This ratio is close to the approximate .875 it produced. Without additional information I would assume gears of equal teeth, say A = 50 and B = 50 would produce a 1" lay. If that is the case the formula would be A/B

I'm curious about what is a twisting machine, and who you are? Can you tell us more about your machine, what you twist, and what you mean by run cable?

no graham you would think that but that is wrong the 1" gears are 62 for A and 65 for B

Hi ken a twisting machine is used for twisting 2 seperate wires together to make a electrical cable like you see in a twited pair in a usb cale and i am an employee of a wire company and i am designing a mini twisting machine and am looking for a way to run it by gears

With that additional info, it looks like the required gear ratio is about 95% of the desired twist.
58/70 = .828 produces .875 .828/,875 = .946 or 94.6%
62/65 = .954 produces 1.0 .954/1 = 95.4%
If that holds up then the formula would be
A/B ratio = desired twist * .95
